Using the Desktop Notification Client

When a notification is triggered that has your DNC assigned as an endpoint, the notification is sent to your DNC, which automatically opens to display the notification. For regular notifications, it's displayed in the lower right corner. Hovering on the blue heading displays the close icon.

When a Windows desktop is locked, you can still receive notifications on your lock screen if your administrator enabled this feature during installation or if you change Lockscreen notifications enabled in the DNC settings. Note that audio will be played for these notifications only if a user is logged in.

• Lock Screen – This is when the screen does not show a login prompt. Typically shown when you lock the screen or the machine goes into sleep mode and before you hit a key or move the mouse to display the login screen.

  Note: Workaround: Your IT admin can alter the global group policy to not display the lock screen in all cases. This setting is found in the Microsoft Management Console: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization: Enable Do not display the lock screen.

• Login Screen – This appears after performing a keyboard or mouse action to display the login prompt.

Emergency Alert Template

Your system administrator determines which notification priority level triggers the Emergency Alert template. (By default, notifications with priority 9 or 10 use the Emergency Alert template.) DNC displays these notifications full screen on your desktop or laptop. See Setting the priority when creating notifications.

Notifications can be configured to play multiple times (iterations) or continuously until the sender turns the notification off. (See Notification General Settings - Activation Types.) This means that when you close an emergency alert notification, it may open again if the number of alert iterations has not completed or the continuous mode alert has not been turned off.

If your Windows desktop is locked or in screen saver mode, the audio, if included with the notification, plays. The notification is not displayed but is recorded in the DNC Received Notifications window. On a Mac desktop, no audio is played and the notification is not displayed, but the notification is recorded in the DNC Received Notifications window.

When a Mac desktop is in sleep mode or you're logged out of the desktop, no notification is received. (And, if a notification is not received, it can't be recorded in the Received Notifications window.)

The Triggers page of the DNC allows you to send preconfigured notifications, as created by your Revolution administrator. See Desktop Triggers for information on configuring these triggers.

The top of the page may contain a single, centered emergency trigger. Your admin can create a single Desktop Emergency Trigger that will appear at the top to allow it to be easily seen and used. If your DNC is registered with multiple Revolution servers, you will only see an emergency trigger from the first-registered server that has one.

You can also send the emergency notification from the DNC icon in the task bar by right-clicking on the icon and selecting the name of the emergency trigger.

Below the emergency trigger will be a listing of any other triggers that your administrator has configured to be available to your site. If your DNC is registered to multiple Revolution servers, you will see triggers associated with all servers.

To trigger a notification:

1. Select the trigger you want to send.

2. In the resulting window, you may have the option to fill in a Title and Body field, depending on how the administrator configured the trigger. These fields are optional.

3. You may also be asked to enter a security code. The Revolution admin who set up the trigger can provide you with this information.

4. Select Send.

You can refresh the page to retrieve any new triggers or to update your triggers based on a new site location.

Some DNC triggers may require you to be logged into a Revolution instance to activate the notification. To log in to the Revolution instance:

1. Select Login from the left-hand menu.

2. In the Login window, enter your Revolution credentials.

Note that you can only log in to the DNC if it registers with a single Revolution server or multiple servers in a redundancy setup.

Once you are logged into the DNC, you will remain logged in regardless of any DNC restarts or OS logouts or restarts.

To log out of the DNC, select the Logged in as icon and complete the log out process.

To view notifications that have already displayed in your DNC:

1. Open DNC from the Windows Notification area or Mac System Tray.
2. Select any notification to open it in a browser window.

Notifications are retained for the designated length of time set in your DNC Settings. The default is five day's worth of notifications.

You or your admin can configure the DNC in the following ways:

• During Installation or Upgrade – You or your admin can define:

  • Local Port — specifies the internal DNC to System Service port.

  • Manual IP list — a comma-separated list of IP addresses for manually connecting to Revolution servers

  • Show notifications when the screen is locked — Define whether notifications can be shown on the lock screen or login screen.

  • Enable remote access via the cloud — define whether the DNC user can receive and send notifications when connected to the internet in a hybrid or remote work scenario. See Using the DNC with Remote Access.

  The System Service is named Syn-Apps DNC Broker.

• Within the Client – You select Settings to view or edit information.

  • Days to keep notifications in history – (Editable) enter an integer for the number of days to show in the received notifications list.
  • Lockscreen notifications enabled – (View only) (Only applies to Windows OS) Allows the DNC to display notifications on a locked screen.
  • Local Port – (View only) Displays the local port, as set up by your administrator.
  • Registered Servers – (View only) Displays any currently registered servers.
  • Manual Server List – (View only) A list of IP addresses or FQDNs for servers that did not automatically register through DHCP option 72, but were instead added through the DNC Settings file.

  The registered servers are recognized machine-wide to support all users who may be using the machine.

• Editing the DNC settings file – An admin can alter settings in the file C:\Program Files (x86)\Syn-Apps\Desktop Notification Client\Broker\settings.json

  It is expected that an admin may need to alter the following, if necessary.

  • LocalPort – include the port number. For example, "LocalPort"=4442,

  • Lockscreen – set "Enabled":true or "Enabled":false.

  • ManualServerList – a list of IP addresses or FQDNs for servers:

    • Multiple manual servers – "ManualServerList":["server1","server2"]

    • No manual servers – "ManualServerList":[]

  It is assumed that the admin understands the specific tasks to accomplish this flow. The admin should shut down the system service (Syn-Apps DNC Broker), close the DNC, edit and save the file, restart the system service, and start the DNC.

You or your admin can configure the DNC in the following ways:

• During Installation

  • Manual IP list — a comma-separated list of IP addresses for manually connecting to Revolution servers

  • Enable remote access via the cloud — define whether the DNC user can receive and send notifications when connected to the internet in a hybrid or remote work scenario. See Using the DNC with Remote Access.

• Within the Client – You select Settings to view or edit information.

  • Days to keep notifications in history – (Editable) enter an integer for the number of days to show in the received notifications list.
  • Local Port – (View only) Displays the local port, as set up by your administrator.
  • Registered Servers – (View only) Displays any currently registered servers.
  • Manual Server List – (View only) A semicolon-separated list of IP addresses or FQDNs for servers that did not automatically register through DHCP option 72, but were instead added through the DNC Settings file.

  The registered servers are recognized machine-wide to support all users who may be using the machine.

• Editing the DNC settings file – An admin can alter settings in the file /Library/Application Support/Syn-Apps/DNCBroker/settings.json

  It is expected that an admin may need to alter the following, if necessary.

  • LocalPort – include the port number. For example, "LocalPort"=4442,

  • ManualServerList – a list of IP addresses or FQDNs for servers

    • Multiple manual servers – "ManualServerList":["server1","server2"]

    • No manual servers – "ManualServerList":[]

  It is assumed that the admin understands the specific tasks to accomplish this flow. The admin should shut down the system daemon (com.synapps.dncbroker.mitel), close the DNC, edit and save the file, restart the system service, and start the DNC.

Your Revolution administrator may have installed the DNC with the ability to connect while away from the local network or VPN. Your DNC settings page will show you whether this is enabled if the Remote access enabled field is checked.

Note: Your DNC installation must connect to a local network at least once before it can be used remotely.

When you are connected with remote access:

• You can receive text and image notifications

• You can receive stored audio notifications immediately and live one-way notifications after the recording is complete.

• You can respond to notifications.

• You can activate notifications, for those triggers you have already received while on a local or VPN network.

Note: This functionality is only available on Microsoft Windows systems.

If your Windows system allows for multiple users to log in simultaneously, each user can receive notifications through the DNC. An admin installs the DNC once, which makes it available to all users of the machine.

Your Revolution administrator creates a notification with the machine as an endpoint. Any users logged into the machine will then receive that notification.

Each user can alter the number of Retention Days in the DNC settings for their instance.

If the notification allows responses, Revolution will accept all responses, but only display the most recent response on the machine.

Use the standard OS uninstall procedures to uninstall the DNC.
