Using the Logs
Note: Only Admin user role has access to logs. Logs are intended for use in conjunction with Support.
You can view logs online or download them to a text file. (See Download Logs).
Within the Global Settings, you define the level of information captured in the logs. This changes the level of logging information collected once you save this process. Any information previously collected will still be available.
Note: Admin users only.
- Go to Global Settings > Logging Level.
-
For Logging Level, select one of the following options (listed in order of most logging information to least):
- Debug, Info (default), Warn, Error, or Fatal.
Note: Only select Debug when you are troubleshooting issues, as it generates the most data. If you do select this value, the value for Number of days to keep old logs in the Logging Settings will be changed to 2 (instead of the default value of 14). You will need to manually change this value when you change the level back to something other than Debug.
- Select Save.
Alter the fields in the Logging page to narrow down the logging information.
- Go to Logging.
-
(Optional) Alter any of the following:
-
Alter the Start Date and Start Time, then optionally select Set end date/time to set a value other than the current date and time.
If you change these values, you must select Filter Results.
- In the header of the log, select Log Level, then one or more of the following options (listed in order of most information to least):
- Debug, Info, Warn, Error, Fatal
-
In the header of the log, select Log Type, then one or more of the available options.
For Audit, see Audit Logs.
- For Message, filter the messages by a text string.
-
For example: For Log Type, select IPDevice to display only IP Device Activator log entries, and then for Message, enter 11.64.
The log type, Audit, tracks user actions within Revolution, as well as any activated notifications.
Use this information to monitor most user actions and to analyze the activated notifications.
You can view the audit logs in the Audit tab of the Logging page. Use the Message column header also to filter for specific messages.
You can change the number of days for which Revolution will keep a history of the audit logs in the Settings tab of the Logging page.
Tip: For security purposes, the Audit log tracks user actions such as:
- log in and log out
- create, edit, delete notifications, tags, triggers, sites
- configuration changes
- user account creation, edits, deletes, and password changes
- dashboard changes
- global settings changes
From the Settings tab of the Logging page, you can define how long to keep various log files and also a custom logging level for the various Revolution modules.
-
Number of days to keep old logs – (Default: 14) This is for all log level information.
If you set the global logging level to Debug, this value automatically changes to 2 to limit the amount of information collected. See Setting the global logging level.
- Number of days to keep audit logs – (Default: 30) This is specific to information of the type, Audit. See Audit Logs.
-
Add custom Logging level – Select this to customize the logging level for the various Revolution modules. After selecting your Module and Log Level, select Add. Repeat this as necessary for other modules. Finally, select Save to complete the process.
Click Download to save the logs to a zip file (SARevolutionLog.zip).
Open the zip file to find the Logs.txt file, which combines all the individual log files. Data in the text file is comma delimited so you can import it into a spreadsheet.
Every subsequent time you download a new file, the filename is appended with a numeric count, such as SAARevolution(1).zip.
If you want an individual log file, filter the log type first and then click download.
