Creating and Using Dynamic Tags

Dynamic tags use Boolean operators to define search criteria to create a list of endpoints on the fly. You can create dynamic tags for both endpoints and contacts. Dynamic tags can be nested in standard tags. Standard tags are static until you manually update them.

There are two types of dynamic tags – dynamic endpoint tags and dynamic contact tags. Dynamic endpoint tags cannot include contacts and dynamic contact tags cannot include endpoints. However, creating dynamic tags works the same for both endpoints and contacts. The only difference in creating them is the list of options in the System Tag drop-down list differs.

Unlicensed endpoints are not included in dynamic tags.

Let's look at a few examples first. We'll start with a very simple dynamic endpoint tag, then we'll build a more complex one.

I have several campuses. Campus A network traffic is on 192.168.10.10, Campus B is 192.168.11.11, and Campus C is 192.168.12.12. Rather than creating a standard tag for Campus A and manually choosing all the phones and speakers on that Campus, I created a dynamic tag that searches for endpoints on my network starting with 192.168.10.

Tip: If I'm a multi-site organization, I may also have assigned my Campus A tag to my Campus A site. This prevents my users at Campus B from choosing a tag created for Campus A.

Limiting a tag to a single site

Now, I'll create a tag that sends to all speakers at all three of my campuses. My campuses use Atlas and Algo speakers.

Setting dynamic tags with AND and OR selections

Since the network IP addresses for all three of my campuses starts with 192.168, this tag includes Atlas or Algo speakers at any of my campuses.

Tip: For multi-site organizations, notice that I've left this tag as 'Available in All Sites'. This is because I want my users at any of my three campuses to be able to assign this speaker to an emergency alert.

Now let's look at an example dynamic contact tag. I'll create a tag for my Sales and Marketing departments.

Creating a dynamic tag using an OR selection

  1. Go to Configuration > User Tag.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click New > Dynamic Endpoint Tag.
    • Click New > Dynamic Contact Tag.

  3. Enter a descriptive Name that helps your users identify the recipients when they select this tag as an endpoint to receive notifications.

    There are rules for special characters:

    • Allowed – Forward or back slash (Sales/Marketing), dash (Sales-Marketing), underscore (Sales_Marketing)
    • Not Allowed – Ampersand (Sales & Marketing) or apostrophe (Jean's Team).
  4. Multi-site organizations, do one of the following:
    • If you're an All Sites Admin – To assign this tag to a specific site, disable Available in All Sites and select a Site from the drop-down list. Alternatively, you can leave the tag Available to All Sites.
    • If you're a Site Admin – This tag is automatically assigned to your default site.

  5. Select a System Tag from the drop-down list.

    Notes about some System Tag selections when creating Endpoint Tags.

    • Area — The Comparator field allows you to select a predefined Area and the Boundary field allows you to specify whether endpoints inside or outside the area are to be included.

    • IP Network — In the Parameter field, specify an IP Network using CIDR notation; specify multiple networks in a comma-delimited list.

      For example, selecting all endpoints from two different subnets could look like:

      192.168.10.0/24,192.168.12.0/24

  6. Select a Comparator (Boolean operator).

  7. Enter the Parameter to match. Parameters are not case sensitive. You can enter multiple search words; do not use quotes.

    The percent (%), asterisk (*), question mark (?), and underscore (_) are reserved characters and should not be used.

  8. Do one of the following:

    Note: You are limited to 10 condition criteria per tag.

    • If this is the only search criteria (like in the simple search example provided above), click Save & Preview to see the list of endpoints, or just click Save if you don't need to see the list of endpoints.
    • If you need to add an AND Boolean search criteria, click the + to the right of the Boolean search statement. Add your additional search criteria. Click Save or Save when you've finished building your search criteria statements.
    • If you need to add an OR Boolean search criteria, click the + below the Boolean search statement. Add your additional search criteria. Click Save & Preview or Save when you've finished building your search criteria statements.

Dynamic Tags can be copied and deleted, the same as Standard Tags, and searching for tags works the same. See Standard Tags for more information.

Note: When creating a dynamic endpoint tag based on Destination Code System Tag and using the 'does not contain' Comparator, endpoints that do not have a destination code defined are not included in the search, and therefore are not included in the resulting tag.
