Configure Your Avaya Phone System

Communication with Avaya IP phones is configured in the 46xxsettings.txt file, regardless of whether you're using Avaya Aura or IP Office. The only Avaya phone system configuration in UNP is to set the frequency to update the phone registries so the list of available phones in UNP is updated with new and inactivated phones.

The following 9600 series and J series IP phones are supported if they are running the H.323 firmware:

SIP firmware running on the 9600 series and J series IP phones is not supported.

Note: The text and image from a notification is combined and rendered into a new image so the text appears next to the image instead of below it. Avaya phones with very small or monochrome screens are unable to render the new image, therefore no image is sent, just text is sent.

UNP Functions Not Supported

Avaya IP phones do not support the 'Clear notification from display on completion' notification function. This function is typically used for live broadcast notifications when you're also including text. When this function is checked for a notification, the text is automatically cleared from display when the audio or live broadcast completes.

Avaya IP phones do not support Two-Way audio type notifications where the initiating phone is dialing another Avaya phone as the endpoint. You can use an IP speaker, or some other IP device, as the endpoint.

The Trusted Push Server List setting allows an external server to send commands to phones.

SET TPSLIST x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the UNP server IP address.

This setting can have multiple servers list on the same line, separated by commas.

If you are not using default Port 80, you must include the port number in SET TPSLIST x.x.x.x:port. For example, 111.11.11.11:8081.

The Subscription Server List setting allows phones to 'subscribe' or register to a 3rd-party subscription service. This allows UNP to get a list of phones to display on its Endpoint Configuration page.

SET SUBSCRIBELIST http://<UNP-Server-IP>/Avaya/Sub

This setting can have multiple values separated by commas. Each value must be a fully qualified URL to the subscription server as defined by the vendor.

If you are not using default Port 80, you must include the port number in SUBSCRIBLIST x.x.x.x:port. For example, 111.11.11.11:8081.

Allows specific features that relate to pushing content to the phones to be enabled. (For example, allow phones to show WML content or receive audio.) We recommend enabling all push capabilities on your phones in order to receive the full benefit of UNP's features.

Often this setting is done on a phone model basis in your settings file. Be sure to apply this setting for all of the phone types that integrate with UNP.

Leave at the default setting:

All Avaya phones you want to register with UNP must be rebooted for the settings to take effect.

Configure your Avaya communication manager:

  • Avaya IP Office - only requires additional configuration if you're using SIP Activator. Otherwise, the only configuration needed for IP Office was done in the 46xxsettings.txt file. Also includes SIP trunk setup if you're using SIP Activator.
  • Avaya Aura - requires configuration to properly communicate with UNP. Refer to your Aura documentation for configuration instructions.

Important: SIP Activator is required in order to trigger live broadcast/paging notifications.

The only configuration in the UNP application is to set how often you want the application to poll your Avaya phones for updates. This refreshes the Endpoints Configuration page with newly added phones. It also marks any phones that have been taken out of service as inactive, at which point you can delete them from the Endpoints Configuration page. (See Deleting Inactive Endpoints for instructions.)

  1. Go to Configuration > Phone Systems > Avaya.
  2. In the Settings tab, adjust Phone Polling Interval as desired. The default, and minimum, for polling is every 10 minutes. The value entered here must be less than the value configured in Global Settings > Endpoints > Endpoints Inactive Timeout Minutes.
  3. Click Save.
  • Avaya phones display on the Endpoints page with the next system refresh and can then be assigned to notifications. To update the Endpoints page immediately, click the Refresh Data Button in System Status > Avaya Module.
